the legacy puppy initiative
A Mockingbird commitment to investing in the future of the Border Collie.
We believe that sometimes the greatest way to give back is to invest directly in someone else's future.
At Mockingbird Border Collies, we believe the future of the Border Collie depends on more than the decisions breeders make. It depends on the people who dedicate their lives to working, training, competing with, educating others about, and preserving this remarkable breed.
Not everyone who has the potential to make a meaningful contribution has had the opportunity to begin with a thoughtfully bred prospect.
The Legacy Puppy Initiative was created to help bridge that gap.
Every three years, we intend to select one recipient and donate a Mockingbird Border Collie puppy. Our hope is that each placement will create an opportunity that extends well beyond the individual dog; whether through participation in dog sports, preservation of working heritage, education, or meaningful community service.
We don't expect every Legacy Puppy to become a champion or earn an extensive list of titles. We hope each one becomes an ambassador for the breed and a valued partner to the person fortunate enough to receive them.
Who is the legacy puppy for?
Developing the Next Generation of Competitors
Aspiring performance exhibitors, junior handlers, or dedicated dog sport enthusiasts who demonstrate a desire to learn, train, and participate in activities that showcase the Border Collie's versatility.
Serving the Community
Individuals or organizations involved in appropriate canine-assisted programs, education, outreach, or other initiatives where a Border Collie could make a positive contribution.
Preserving Working Heritage
Individuals dedicated to maintaining and developing the Border Collie's natural working abilities. This may include herding enthusiasts, aspiring handlers, or individuals committed to preserving the breed's traditional purpose.

What Does the Legacy Placement Include?
The selected recipient will receive a carefully chosen Mockingbird Border Collie puppy at no purchase cost.
Each placement will include:
A puppy selected for suitability based on temperament, structure, and individual potential.
Age-appropriate veterinary care, vaccinations, and health records.
Microchip and registration documentation.
A puppy starter package.
A written placement agreement.
Lifetime breeder support and guidance.
Access to Mockingbird educational and owner resources.
The puppy will be selected based on the needs and circumstances of the recipient, rather than expecting the recipient to accept a particular puppy or performance prospect.
All placements remain subject to appropriate health, temperament, and home evaluations.
Our Commitment Doesn't End at Placement
We believe responsible breeders remain invested in the dogs they produce throughout their lives.
The Legacy Puppy Initiative is no exception.
Our relationship with the recipient will extend beyond the day the puppy goes home. We want to follow the dog's development, celebrate its accomplishments, offer guidance when needed, and remain a resource throughout its lifetime.
Whether a Legacy Puppy earns its first title, steps onto a herding field, enters a show ring, begins a community service role, or simply becomes an extraordinary companion, we want to celebrate that journey.
Success will not be measured exclusively in ribbons or titles. It will be measured in the partnership created and the opportunities made possible.
