Presentation, not Alteration.
At Mockingbird Border Collies, grooming is not about changing the dog . It’s about maintaining health, coat integrity, and natural breed type.
A properly bred and conditioned Border Collie requires routine maintenance, not excessive grooming or sculpting.
Our approach emphasizes education, simplicity, and respect for the natural coat.
The Mockingbird Grooming Philosophy
Border Collies are designed to work. Their coat protects them from weather, terrain, and environmental conditions.
We prioritize:
Healthy skin and coat function
Clean, natural presentation
Minimal trimming
Consistent maintenance over cosmetic shortcuts
A well-maintained dog should look effortless, never artificial.
Routine Grooming Schedule
Weekly Maintenance
Thorough brushing to prevent matting
Check ears and clean as needed
Trim nails
Inspect coat for debris or irritation
Consistency prevents problems before they begin.
Brushing & Coat Care
Regular brushing maintains coat health and reduces shedding.
Focus areas:
Behind ears
Feathering on legs
Tail base
Undercoat during seasonal shed
Tools commonly used:
Slicker brush
Undercoat rake (during heavy shed)
Metal comb for finishing
The goal is a clean, flowing coat — never fluffed excessively.
Bathing
Border Collies do not require frequent bathing.
Recommended:
Every 4–8 weeks
Before trials or events
When coat becomes dirty or oily
Use gentle, coat-supporting shampoo that preserves natural texture.
Show Grooming Standards
A correct Border Collie should not appear sculpted or stylized.
Acceptable Trimming
✔ Feet only
Feet may be trimmed to:
Maintain neat outline
Improve traction
Create a tidy appearance
Areas NOT Trimmed
Body coat
Neck or mane
Feathering
Tail
Outline of the dog
The natural silhouette of the Border Collie must remain intact.
Presentation should highlight structure — not disguise it.
Preparing Your Dog for Events
Before shows and trials:

Confidence and training matter far more than cosmetic grooming.
